The Galactic Enigma
By Aggelos Zachariou

Once, there was a boy whose mind had lots of doubts and questions about life and the world. His name was Luke and he loved astronomy.

One day as he was biking, he met another boy named Skye and followed him. So, they rode to an observatory, where they found lots of fascinating things, like maps, telescopes and many others. Skye explained to Luke that he had found the biggest treasure of the Galaxy and that if Luke could solve some enigmas, he would reveal it to him. Luke didn’t believe him and suddenly, the observatory was transformed into a spaceship! “I believe you now!”, Luke exclaimed.

The spaceship launched from the Earth and within three minutes encountered the Moon. The Moon was deserted and covered with something like a gray dust which looked like powder. The sky was black without stars. The Earth was located a bit above the horizon. Skye said “Solve this enigma and we’ll move on, which planet is red and has got two little moons?” “Mars!” Luke said “Well done! Full speed to Mars”. The spaceship immediately went to Mars. This was more fascinating than the Moon, because there was an atmosphere with a light yellow sky and the ground was also covered with dust, but with a red to brown colour this time. A vortex was blowing some kilometres farther. “Here is another more difficult enigma; which planet is famous for its beautiful rings?” Skye asked. “I think it is Saturn. Isn’t it?” Luke answered. “Excellent!” Skye shouted. And the spaceship began the voyage to Titan, Saturn’s biggest moon. It was a cold and cloudy planet, with liquid methane lakes and some volcanoes. The ground was hard and frozen and Saturn was blurredly visible because of the clouds. “This is the last and most difficult enigma; which creature has got four legs when it is born, two during its lifetime and three when it becomes old?” Skye asked. “Is it man?” Luke asked. “You’re unbelievable!” Skye shouted.

And finally, the spaceship went to the most beautiful planet of the Galaxy, named…Earth! It landed near Luke’s home. Before farewell, Skye explained to Luke that he had taken him to the Moon and three planets with possibilities of life. Mars had probably got conditions favorable for life in its far past, Titan would become like the Earth in the far future and the Earth had already got life! Then, Luke found the treasure; it was his little brother, who would be born soon. He was happy, because he had also found the absolute truth of life, which is love.

A night at the camp site
By Lia Christoforou

As he was sitting down, he felt something moving next to his leg. He tried to stay calm. He turned around, but he saw nothing. “What was it?” he thought.
Mark was at a camping site with his friends. Every night John went to pick up some woods for the fire. And at that night of 13th of October he did the same thing.
He was walking in the forest and he was trying to find some woods when he suddenly saw something. It was big and it didn’t seem to be human. But it got lost in a second. He felt relieved and saved. After a few seconds he heard a strange noise behind him. He turned on the torch, but again nothing. He was afraid and he couldn’t stay there anymore. He started running back to the camp site. When he arrived nobody was there. “Where is everybody?” he thought. He tried to calm himself down but when he looked at the ground he saw something that proved him what he had heard and seen was true. It was probably a big animal. At that time his friends came back from the forest.
“Sorry, but we have to tell you something.” When his friends started talking, he interrupted them. “I have to tell you something more important”. He started telling the story about the huge animal. “I was so scared” he said and as he was sitting down he felt something moving next to his leg. He started shouting, but when he looked down, he saw a cute dog. His friends started laughing and then they explained to him what had happened.

The Strange Noise
By Stylianopoulou Eftychia

I knew the journey was going to be exciting as my friends were going to be with me but I had no idea it would be such an adventure. It was the first time that I had felt being in danger, but at the same time I was enjoying it.
A week ago, I went with my school on a journey to Naousa. We were excited and we were planning what we could do there. I wanted to have fun and never forget this experience. When we arrived, our teacher said "whatever you want, you can come and tell me”. Then, we found a place to sit and started eating. Suddenly, we saw a deep light coming from the forest and we decided to follow it.

We were very close to the light, when we listened to a strange noise. We were totally scared! After that, everything was silent. One of my friends started crying. So, we decided to go back, but we didn't remember how. We started running, until we found a dog in a trap. That was the noise that we had listened to earlier. We were so relieved it was only a dog. We carefully released it and we returned to the place where our teacher was waiting for us. "Where were you?" she asked angrily. "We only took a walk to the forest" I said and I winked at John.

Finally, the journey was an adventure and a lesson for us. We saved a dog and we learnt that we must always follow our teacher's instructions. I will never forget this extraordinary journey.

Beach Hero
By Alexandros Delitzas

It was a beautiful day of the summer. The sun was shining and everybody was at the beach to enjoy the blue sea. I was five years old and I could barely swim. My mother was taking a nap under the umbrella. I was enjoying myself making sandcastles. After a few minutes I decided to get into the sea in order to show everyone that I could swim. That was the moment that our lovely day turned into a nightmare…

While I was trying to swim, a big wave carried me out to the sea. At first my mother didn’t notice but fortunately a woman on the beach did. I was extremely frightened and I was screaming ‘Help, Help!’. Finally, the woman swam quickly and rescued me. My mom was very grateful and said to her ‘Thank you for saving my little boy’s life. God bless you!’. The woman wished us well and left the beach. I never saw her again.

Ten years later, I was at the same beach and now I was fifteen years old. I had become a pretty strong swimmer. While I was surfing in the water, I suddenly noticed a woman standing on the beach who was calling for help. I took a quick glance around and saw that a man had fallen out of his boat and was in serious trouble. I acted spontaneously and moved my surfboard towards him. By the time I got there, the man had been under the water for approximately a minute. I grabbed him and helped him until a rescue boat came.

I became a hero and received a medal for my bravery! But that’s not all. Guess what! I got a big surprise. It turned out that I had saved the husband of the woman, who had prevented me from drowning ten years ago.

Three horse whisperers and the adventure in the barn
By Tsitiridis Panagiotis

It was Christmas. A few days before the holiday ended and schools opened again, a group of three horse whisperers found themselves with nothing to do. Then their friend, Bob sent a memo to Peter, their leader, asking for help with a problem faced by Uncle Spiros and his horse Lucky.

As soon as they arrived, Uncle Spiros took them to the barn and explained to them that Lucky got angry at exactly the same time every night and made a lot of noise. Indeed that very night at ten sharp, they heard loud sounds of neighing and kicking but as soon as they got there and turned on the light, Lucky was calm and quiet.

The next morning the three horse whisperers took Lucky and the other two horses for a ride in the mountains to try to find out what the problem was, but they didn’t manage to draw any conclusions. At night Uncle Spyros went to the barn, turned on the light and brushed the horse’s hair to help him relax and be able to sleep better and the truth is that, that night there was not fuss, and children celebrated, with candies and walnuts roasted in the fireplace. They recalled past stories and experiences and enjoyed themselves. Babis one of the three whisperers told a story about a little girl who was afraid of the shadows of trees and called her mother every night to sleep with her.

The next morning the three men dealt only with Lucky. At night when the lights were out Lucky became furious again. But this time they all noticed the statue of Santa Claus standing proudly outside the barn window, brightly lit every night at ten.

The next morning Santa Claus was removed from the yard and Lucky slept peacefully from then on.

Sounds in the forest
By Konstantinos Anastasopoulos

Last week, my friend Ben and I had an adventure in the forest. The forest was very dark and quite scary. While we were walking through the forest, we heard a loud noise. We didn't know what it was.

Ben wanted to follow the sound. At first, I thought it was a good idea. Then I said no. I was frightened and I wanted to go back. While we were arguing, we heard some more sounds. After that I started to run. I ran and ran until I got out of the forest. It was very quiet.

Soon Ben came, too. He was laughing. He said there was nothing scary in the forest. There were other children there. They were making the noise and trying to scare us. In the end, I was laughing, too!

Cycling on Thin Ice
By Lazaros Dellis

An amazing incident happened to me a few years ago. It was a foggy winter morning, when the lanes around our village were icy and treacherous. It was my brother Mark’s birthday and he was given a wonderful new racing bike.

My brother was skinny and athletic and a daredevil. He fancied he was a future Olympic champion, able to ride in all conditions and at all kinds of speed. “Come on!” he shouted, as I stood and admired the demonstration he was giving. “Hop on the back and I’ take you for a spin!”

As I was only eight or nine at that time, I couldn’t resist the invitation. Soon we were speeding out of the village and along the frozen country lanes. “How fast can we go?” I yelled. ”You wait and see, “my brother answered. I should have realized something bad was going to happen but I didn’t.

The lanes were quiet that day. We overtook one or two cars but they were travelling slowly and carefully. Our bicycle, however, was approaching the speed of light, at least That’s how it seemed to me. “Slow down”, I shrieked, “I want to get off”.

Ignoring these appeals, my brother went faster. We were rocketing along when we came to a sharp bend in the road. My brother leaned the bicycle at a crazy angle and applied the brakes. The front tyre skidded on the ice. For a second, we hang on for dear life. Then, the bicycle skated gently across the lane, throwing us into the ditch.

When I woke up, I was in the Accident and Emergency Department of the local Hospital. My brother uninjured, looked anxious. I soon found out why. Part of my ear had been caught and was now hanging off, while blood was pouring down my face.

The doctors sewed the ear back on. Now you can’t even see a scar. I can now see the funny side of the incident and my brother and I laugh, whenever we remember it. I have never been out with him on a bike ride again, though.
